Tango:
An Ongoing Photo Documentary Project

"The tango was originally an improvisational dance that combined rhythms and movements from several pre-existing music and dance traditions. These included the candombe - an Argentine variant of African slave dances brought to the port of Buenos Aires. The Cuban habanera was another source, itself a blend of French colonial contradances and African influences.

Elements of the habanera and the European polka had been combined into a local Argentine dance called the milonga. The milonga itself was originally a type of improvisational song of the payadores or folksingers of the Argentine pampas and as a dance it became popular among the compadritos or street toughs of Buenos Aires in the 1870s."

Chasing America:
A Memoir

by Dennis Watlington
author photograph by Sabine Vollmer von Falken
published by St. Martin's Press

"Dennis Watlington is an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker, a television writer, a screenwriter, and playright. He lives in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts with his wife and two children. Chasing America is his first book."
- St. Martin's Press

"Chasing America is an epic tale of the black experience in late-twentieth century America. Author Dennis Watlington has seen it all and makes no excuses for his addictions, petty crimes, and squandered opportunities, but the racism that surrounds him speaks for itself as he makes his way from Harlem and the Deep South on into the larger, white-run world.

The life he ends up creating - as a husband and father, as a playwright, actor, and writer, and as a friend who never forgets the old neighborhood - is a tribute to his innate decency, his sheer talent, and his inspiring capacity for self-renewal."
- Beth Harpaz, author of Finding Annie Farrell

Shell Chic:
The Ultimate Guide to Decorating Your Home with Seashells"

by Marlene Marshall
photographs by Sabine Vollmer von Falken
published by Storey Books.

Marlene Hurley Marshall and Sabine Vollmer von Falken, both Berkshire area residents, have collaborated in a drop-dead gorgeous book. Everything, from the photos to the layouts to the typography, looks fantastic. Shells decorate fireplaces, shoes, chandeliers, walls, drapes, picture frames, bathtubs, lampshades and tables. Shells are made into delicate blossoms and gathered into bourquets. Shells are used on hats, birdhouses and Christmas wreaths. There are even recipes for, of course, shellfish. The book includes instructions for lots of projects, and every page is an inspiration. Just fantastic.
